Hi, I really, really love your work! It's so smooth and beautiful. I was considering studying animation myself so I wanted to ask you, do you ever feel overwhelmed by the amount of work and hours involved? and do you feel like the amount of pay is worth it? I'd really appreciate if you answered this. Your work is really inspiring!
Well first off, if you’re wanting to get rich, 2D animation is probably not the place to do it. :) I’m doing alright mostly due to my versatility, but I know some very talented people who have trouble getting by. 3D animation is a bit easier to find steady work doing in the US from what I understand, but it can still be a bit tough.
I usually have a ridiculous amount of work, but that’s somewhat self-inflicted. :) I tend to take on more than I probably should, but I really like what I do so I’m happy doing it. Modesty aside, I also work quite fast, so I have the time to do everything. That doesn’t stop me from putting in a bunch of overtime when deadlines start piling up, though! At first, it was a bit overwhelming when it would happen, but I’m pretty used to being in the trenches now.
But to answer your question: is the pay worth it? I guess it depends on how you define “worth it”. I find my work very rewarding, but in general, I find that artists in our industry aren’t paid as well as they should considering the talent and effort they put in. If you define a job’s worth by how much it pays vs the effort put in, then no, probably not. But if you define it by how happy you are overall, then yes, it is worth it—at least in my case.
